Here Senior Buyer, Michael Munroe talks on behalf of the buying team about the role the team plays at Pexhurst, the challenges presented as a result of COVID-19 and the main priorities moving forward…
What role does the buying team play?
The role of a buyer is varied, involved and collaborative. We work on projects both at the tender stage and when a project is live. We assist the estimating team- sourcing the best prices we can for materials and when a project is secured, we arrange the delivery of the initial site set up, such as the welfare cabins. Whilst liaising with the contracts managers and site managers, we arrange plant and tool hire and aim to use sustainably sourced materials wherever possible on all our sites.
What other teams do you work with closely?
We work closely with all teams at Pexhurst- essentially we are all one team. If I were to break it down, we assist the estimators, contracts managers and site managers daily. Each project is different and with all of us working closely, it helps us to overcome any potential bumps in the road to completion.
How has COVID changed the way you work?
The initial priority was health and safety and to minimalize the risk on our projects that were live during the pandemic. We arranged for new COVID-19 safety signage, extra PPE and sanitising stations to be sourced and supplied. One of the biggest challenges for us was when the majority of suppliers were temporarily closed or on furlough. However, over the years we have built up a vast and in-depth supply chain and this was essential in keeping sites serviced and supplied during the most difficult of times.
What are the priorities for your team moving forward?
We look to maintain quality in the materials we supply to the site and maintain good relationships with our suppliers. Our emphasis on being environmentally aware is at the forefront and ultimately keeping costs down. The priority for us is to keep the standards high whilst adapting to the changes and challenges that are facing us all.
