Pexhurst Reflects on Outstanding Performance at Halfway Point of 2023

We are now over halfway through 2023, and I am extremely proud of the quality of work and strong order book Pexhurst has achieved in the past seven months. Pexhurst is on target to exceed turnover of previous years with this year’s turnover expected to exceed £50million, which is a result of existing client relationships providing our team with new opportunities on larger value projects.

This has been positive for Pexhurst in being able to build a reputation and demonstrating an ability to deliver projects in this higher value banding, whilst still being committed to the work we have always been known for.

We remain committed to providing our clients with innovative, sustainable solutions tailored to their needs, ensuring every project is delivered to the highest quality, on time, and on budget.  More importantly, with growth comes the necessity to be cautious of the industry’s fierce competition and market changes.

Fit-Out Industry Key Trends 2023

In terms of the office sector, today’s workplace is poised to undergo a transformative shift, becoming a dynamic and future-proof space. The current market trends are centered around adaptability and innovation, with a strong focus on accommodating the needs of the modern workforce. Key elements that are shaping this evolution include incorporating flexible working arrangements, green elements, and a steadfast commitment to sustainability. As we venture into the future, it’s vital to remember that the key to a thriving workforce lies in crafting a comfortable and productive workspace.

Promoting Sustainability

We recognise that improving the environmental and social performance of assets is becoming increasingly important to our clients, in addition to the crucial role we play in helping achieve these goals through carefully considered and responsible refurbishments and fit-outs.

We have continued to be instrumental in helping clients achieve BREEAM targets and other environmental certifications. Furthermore, Pexhurst’s company emissions have been calculated and verified as part of our Planet Mark Certification, following Greenhouse Gas Protocols (GHG) Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard.

2023 marks the second year of calculating our emissions and based on the baseline of 2022, we have achieved a 31% reduction in reported emissions. We have set a 5% annual reduction target in order to achieve our goal of being net carbon zero by 2050.

Pexhurst Internal Changes

Despite the evolving construction landscape and the industry’s competition, I have no doubt that under our excellent team Pexhurst will continue to flourish. This is bolstered by our investment in apprenticeships and training programmes to help the next generation thrive, enhanced by our recent appointment of a Junior Board to support the future of the company. The Junior Board members will include Kayla Vella, Rosy Vella, Charlotte Harris, Charlie Hazeltine, Dan Beadle and Ashley Williams.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Pexhurst is strengthening its commitment to corporate social responsibility and helping the local community, by engaging with charitable causes, such as Teenage Cancer Trust, Isabel Hospice, Anthony Nolan and We Build The Future. This year, Pexhurst is building on its commitment to smaller-sized charities through the development of a Pexhurst Charitable Foundation, registered by the charity commission.

I am also excited to share our upcoming sponsorship of Welwyn Garden City FC to provide support for all teams from U13s to First Team. This is an opportunity for Pexhurst to promote the construction industry among the local community and youth, whilst supporting football at a grassroots level.

Upholding Quality with Pexhurst Awards

Our Site Proud award, which has certainly helped in driving improvement across our projects, has been enhanced and complemented by our new ‘Above and Beyond’ Award which recognises employees in all departments who demonstrate the core pillars of our business.

Championing Mental Health

As a business, we recognise that Mental Health is a serious and continual issue within our industry, and we have accordingly invested in training team members as Mental Health First Aiders to assist colleagues and provide a key first contact for anyone seeking help. Likewise, our mentoring scheme provides every new employee with a person who can support them throughout their career journey. This year we have also started rolling out fruit baskets to encourage colleagues to consider how healthy eating can support wellbeing.

Optimism for the Remainder of 2023

As we continue to evolve and secure, sophisticated projects for a range of commercial, industrial, and specialist sector clients throughout London, the Midlands and the South of England, it is crucial that we prioritise the strengthening of our supply chain to guarantee the smooth operation and continuous expansion of our projects, while safeguarding our financial sustainability.

With the second half of the year now in full swing, Pexhurst remains mindful of possible market changes coming our way and endeavouring to finish 2023 on a high and successful year. I have no doubt we will achieve this with the efforts of the great team at Pexhurst.
