Pexhurst is delighted to announce it will be collaborating with urban redeveloper The Arch Company on the repurposing of derelict railway arches in South London. The project will see the unused arches turned into stylish and modern spaces suitable for a range of business uses.
Commencing on 8th January 2024, the project will see Pexhurst transform five railway arches at two South London locations, Arches 87-89 & 91 on Tiverton Street in Elephant and Castle, and Arches 795 & 796 on Druid Street in Bermondsey.
The renovation and repurposing work forms part of The Arch Company’s Project 1000, a £200 million plan to invest in unused and dilapidated railway arches. The development programme aims to bring a thousand empty or derelict spaces into use by 2030.
In addition to designing and adapting stylish and modern spaces for new businesses, the project will see further jobs created for the local area, increasing the estimated 25,000 people already employed in arch businesses across London and the UK.
Representing an important step towards the adaptation and reuse of existing buildings, the repurposing work carried out by Pexhurst will comprise a multitude of different refurbishment works, including the removal of the existing frontage and installation of a stylish new glazed entrance, as well as other associated works.
Additionally, a comprehensive installation of new electrics services will be undertaken throughout the entire development. To add a stunning finish, the brickwork will also be professionally restored.
Taking great pride in reimagining London’s built environment
Nick Tagliarini, Marketing Director of Pexhurst, commented, “We are delighted to be partnering with the Arch Company to be a part of the Project 1000 vision. Railway arches are such a prominent landscape within the London built environment, as well as the positive environmental impact that retrofitting railway arches provides.
From café arches to an office, the opportunity to create jobs by bringing this type of space back to life fills the whole Pexhurst team with excitement in creating environments for a diverse mix of businesses and their communities.”
The collaboration between Pexhurst and The Arch Company to transform these railway arches represents a more positive step towards a more sustainable future and, equally as important, allows Pexhurst to align the service it provides to its environmental principles.
