Building for education
Martin Vella, managing director of Pexhurst, says: “Much like with the office sector and working practices, building design in education needs to be changing to meet the needs of new methods of learning. It is not often that we see such a large commitment to the delivery of new schools, so those being built under this new programme need to be fit for purpose, not just today, but for many years to come. This means utilising more open, flexible workspaces, designing in technological infrastructure and the means for it to be adapted as new technology is adopted. Our educational buildings need to be smart in order for those who learn inside them to be smart.
“The design of new schools also needs to understand the benefit that the public realm brings in to a learning environment and should reflect the approach that creative workplaces use to get the best out of the entrepreneurial occupiers who use them.”

Martin Vella, managing director of Pexhurst, says: “The creation of a new technical skills qualification could be one of the biggest boosts to the future of the construction industry that we have seen for some time. A shortage of skilled labour is no secret and with advances in construction methods continually developing, even the existing workforce is becoming unskilled in many areas. We need to see committed, engaged and technically qualified people bringing new vigour to the construction industry, along with an ingrained understanding of new technologies and working practices; T-Levels could just do that.”
