Pexhurst Do “Excellent Job” at the University of Hertfordshire

Pexhurst is delighted to have completed a major refurbishment of the atrium at the University of Hertfordshire. The refurbishment is the first in a massive redevelopment plan being launched by the University over the coming year. The atrium was identified as the heartbeat of the University and as such the pressure was on to get this right.

Pexhurst Commercial Manager Rob Brazier said: “The University never really shuts down and so logistically this project needed to be carefully managed. Obviously, it’s quieter in the summer so this is when we undertook this work. We worked 24/7 in order to get this completed on time and I am delighted at the response to what we created.”

“The atrium was first built 12 years ago as an external space and so had no heating. This obviously did not make it space where people wanted to gather. What we have created is a very useable space that encourages people to sit and relax. We closed in the space and built it up to current building regulation standards. We have added heating, a mezzanine floor plus transit space and corridors.”

At a cost of £1.6 million, the aim for fit-out contractor Pexhurst was to create a space where people wanted to gather and that is what has been achieved. The University’s spokesperson says: “We are so pleased with the work done by Pexhurst. It is an excellent result and so far we have had amazing feedback from the teachers and students who are using the atrium.”

“We have only been using the new space for six weeks but we are already seeing that it is a place where people are gathering – where students and teachers can have one to one tuitions sessions outside of the rigours of the lecture hall.”

“Pexhurst delivered an excellent job. They worked closely to meet the time restrictions in place and they have delivered a fantastic space for our students.”
