We’re proud to have had many members of staff celebrate significant anniversaries through the years – a trend which continues. The latest member of the ‘20-years at Pexhurst club’ is Site Manager Mark Loveday, who we sat down with to discuss the milestone…
1. What is your role and what made you apply for your job with Pexhurst?
I started my career at Pexhurst as a carpenter after a friend of mine, who fitted carpets for Pexhurst at the time, passed on their details. About four years later it was suggested that I take on training for a managerial role and the rest is history.
2. How have things changed during your 20 years at the company?
Pexhurst looks pretty different to when I first started. At that time, there were lots of trades working directly for Pexhurst, as well as a joinery shop and electrical department in house. In the last 20 years, the company has grown and evolved to become the medium sized fit-out and refurbishment company that it is today, with a strong apprenticeship scheme and in-house Sustainability Coordinator – a new role for Pexhurst.
3. Which project at Pexhurst did you find most interesting or are you most proud of?
The one that stands out, mainly down to the scale of the circa 255,000 sq ft warehouse, is Titan Distribution Centre in Bristol. But if we’re talking about which one I enjoyed the most, it would have to be the Edinburgh Avenue project in Slough. It was my first BREEAM project, and the first job I completed with solar panels – this marked a real change in time for the industry for me.
4. What advice do you have for those looking to get started in the construction industry?
The construction industry is very varied – there are lots of different roles available meaning everyone can find something to suit them. Pexhurst is particularly good at investing in people and allowing them to progress their careers within the company.
5. What do you get up to when you’re not working?
Sometimes I go fishing, but on my free weekends my partner and I like to drive out to places we’ve not been before for a meal. We also love having the grandkids as much as possible.
6. What are your predictions for the future of the industry?
Quite simply, the future is bright. There is a lot of dedicated young people coming up through the industry which can only be a good thing. There is always new ways to do things and new ideas to explore, so I’m excited to see how things continue to evolve for Pexhurst and the wider construction industry.
