Meet the Pexhurst Apprentice: Charlie Hazeltine

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself? What were you doing before, what you do in your spare time?
“Before my time at Pexhurst, I was a car Mechanic for four years at a local garage. In this time, I was able to obtain my level 3 NVQ and become fully qualified. I then decided that I wanted to be a site manager and moved into an asbestos consultancy role. In this role, I was fortunate enough to come across Pexhurst at a site in Wood Green which is how I am where I am today.

In my spare time I fix cars, go carp fishing and hold a Saturday night DJ residency at a night club in Romford, Essex.”

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship?
“I chose the apprenticeship route as I believe it is the best way to learn. With already completing an apprenticeship, I knew it was the ideal way to gain invaluable experience which can not be gained from college and at the same time earn some cash.”

Did you always know you wanted to do an apprenticeship?
“Yes! I believe anyone regardless of the age should consider an apprenticeship when starting out in a new career.”

What do you do on a day-to-day basis?
“Each day is different in my job role. However, generally speaking, my day-to-day duties involve carrying out inductions, checking RAMs, check housekeeping, check plant and equipment, ensure all site personnel are wearing the correct PPE, clean the welfare and ensure there is adequate welfare available, check operatives have what they need to carry out the task in hand safely and efficiently plus many more depending on the situation.”

What’s the best thing about your job?
“The best thing about my job is job satisfaction, working to a programme, seeing the end result and how much work and effort has gone into that particular project.”

Who supported you the most when applying for your apprenticeship and what support did you receive?
“Whilst applying for my apprenticeship, generally a lot of the support was off my own back along with some guidance from family members. Since being an apprentice with Pexhurst, the support has been fantastic. Whether its support on-site or head office, there is always someone to talk to and guide you on what they believe is the best option for me.”

Do you have any tips for students considering an apprenticeship?
“Just go for it and give it your all. You only get out what you put in so don’t be afraid to ask questions and get stuck into it. You will not be disappointed, and not only do you gain a nationally recognised qualification you also get the chance to gain site-based experience, which in my opinion is invaluable.”

Just for fun: what did you want to be when you were younger?
“Every young boy’s dream – A professional footballer”
