The project involved the creation of a multi-use learning space for incoming students at the University of Hertfordshire. The Prince Edward Hall was designed to facilitate informal learning by individuals and groups in a stimulating and co-working friendly environment, the University commissioned Pexhurst to modernise this outdated space and implement new features for use by students and staff.

Pexhurst faced the task of a challenging timeframe. We were given 18 weeks to fit-out and refurbish Prince Edward Hall, for use by students in the autumn term. The project included highly technical aspects, such as the entire replacement of the heating and air conditioning systems within the short programme duration. The construction also required the team to fit the hall with a 1m diameter duct which ran to the ceiling. Owing to Pexhurst’s time management, the complex installation was executed on time and within schedule.

In terms of electrical work, we installed new LED lighting in a modern geometric pattern to revitalise the space, which also required the installation of a linear circuit board. Acoustic performance of the space was also a consideration for the client, leading us to apply acoustic foam panelling to the walls and ceilings to reduce reverberation.

Moreover, Pexhurst completed a strip-out of the main area of the hall, which comprised a large concrete stage. We stripped out most of the concrete section and installed a structural steel support to the retained section of the stage. Also creating a new timber framework structure.

We applied new MDF panels to encapsulate one new 220" LED screen, five new 86” LED screens and supporting structures around the perimeter of the interior space. The MDF panelling allowed for future accessibility, ensuring ease of removal, should the University decide to renovate the space in the future.

As the construction sector looks to improve its environmental impact, Pexhurst are no exception. Conscious of the carbon footprint of the building, we worked with another contractor based on site, to ensure that all material stripped out by us would be made available for reuse, reducing wastage. Once the area was stripped out, the team refashioned the timber cladding as timber supports.

Time management skills and technical expertise ensured that the space was refurbished within the desired time frame. The university was highly satisfied with the Prince Edward Hall fit-out, providing them with a highly functional area with a sleek interior aesthetic, bringing it in line with other recently refurbished campus buildings.
